Rest in peace, 3COM OfficeConnect. While you were indeed a very capable device for the past three years, your constant conking-out forced our family to finally source a new replacement. Enter Linksys. My dad and I agreed on the WRT54G2 (non modem version of course). As self-proclaimed, “Network King of Sorrow” of the house, I ran through the setup in my solitude and it’s been a snap. This model claims to boast a longer communication range versus the old OfficeConnect, but verification procedures have yet to be conducted. Nevertheless I’m pleased — totally loving the sex appeal! How come other routers don’t look as visceral? We shall monitor its performance over the next few weeks…
Here’s what you get in the box: The router itself, an ethernet cable, AC plug (There’s an led light on the transformer — a nice touch.), Installation CD and instructions.
This is the admin, very nicely laid verses OfficeConnect’s cluttered and old fashioned interface, but on more high fidelity basis; feels like you’re arbitrating the gauges of an F-16 Falcon. Caution Windows7 users, you’ll need at least XPmode to run this software (I ran it under Snow Leopard lol).
Overall a good buy at rm190. You’re likely paying for the design and the reputation of Cisco for the most part. The keeper told me that this would not be as good as their old version (WRT54G) because it’s not open source linux. But let me get one thing straight open source, including this word press engine is heavily riddled with bugs. Gimp anyone? *BLARGH*.
